After Exposure of an Impacted Tooth

Bleeding

Some bleeding or blood-tinged saliva is normal for the first 24 hours after surgery. If you notice heavier bleeding:

• Place clean gauze directly over the surgical area
  
• Bite down firmly for 30 continuous minutes
  
• Repeat if needed with fresh gauze
  

If bleeding persists or your mouth is filling rapidly with blood, call our office for instructions. If we are unavailable and bleeding is significant, visit the nearest emergency room.

Swelling

Swelling is a common post-operative response and may peak around the second or third day.

To reduce swelling:

• Apply an ice pack to the face near the surgical area
  
• Use 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off during waking hours for the first 36 hours
  
• After 36 hours, switch to warm compresses if needed
  

Diet

• Stick to soft, cool foods and liquids for the first day
  
• Avoid hot beverages or hard, crunchy foods
  
• Examples: yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, pasta, eggs
  
• Resume a normal diet as soon as it is comfortable, unless advised otherwise
  

Continue to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and support healing.

Pain Management

Discomfort is expected following this type of oral surgery and typically improves over the course of several days.

Pain relief options:

• Take Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin): 400–600 mg every 4–6 hours
  
• Alternate or combine with Acetaminophen (Tylenol) as needed
  
• For severe pain, use your prescribed medication exactly as directed
  

Do not drive or operate machinery while using prescription pain medication. Avoid alcohol, and store any unused medication safely.

If pain persists beyond a few days or worsens, please call our office.

Oral Hygiene

Keeping your mouth clean will reduce the risk of infection and speed up the healing process.

• Start brushing the day after surgery, being gentle near the surgical site
  
• Rinse with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 1 cup warm water) several times a day
  
• Rinse especially after meals to remove food debris
  
• Do not use commercial mouthwashes unless recommended
  

Reminder: A clean wound heals faster and with fewer complications.

Activity

Take it easy for the first few days:

• Limit physical activity to avoid increased bleeding or discomfort
  
• If you experience throbbing or new bleeding during activity, stop and rest
  
• Be aware that reduced food and fluid intake may affect your energy levels
  

Orthodontic Chain Instructions

In most cases, your surgeon has attached a small gold or silver chain to the exposed tooth during surgery. This chain:

• Is bonded to the impacted tooth and attached to your orthodontic appliance
  
• Will be used by your orthodontist to guide the tooth into its proper position
  
• Should remain in place — avoid pulling or tugging at it
  

You may see your orthodontist at any time after the procedure to begin eruption or continue alignment treatment.

When to Contact Us

Call our office if you experience:

• Prolonged or heavy bleeding
  
• Severe pain unrelieved by medication
  
• Signs of infection (fever, foul odor, pus)
  
• Difficulty eating or drinking after the first 48 hours
  
• Loose or dislodged chain
  

For urgent concerns, or if we are unavailable, proceed to the nearest emergency room.
